Mold in Groton
Groton covers about 33.7 square miles and had 11,315 residents in 2020. That is roughly 335 people per square mile, far less dense than Tyngsborough or Chelmsford. It was settled in 1655. For the overview, see mold removal Dunstable MA.
What affects homes here
- Rivers and hills. The Nashua, Squannacook and Merrimack rivers drain the town, and Gibbet Hill rises at its center. Runoff follows the terrain.
- Woodland. Over 30 percent of the town is protected open space. Trees shade roofs and drop leaves into gutters.
- Older houses. Stone or concrete foundations, leaky attics.
- Newer houses. Tighter, so they hold humidity unless fans work.

Common problems
- Damp or finished basements: basement mold removal.
- Winter attic frost and ice dams: attic mold removal.
- Bare soil under older houses and additions: crawl space mold removal.
- After a leak or storm: mold removal after water damage.
Checklist
- Watch where water runs after heavy rain. Extend downspouts.
- Clear gutters in autumn, especially under trees.
- Check basement humidity in summer. Keep it under 60 percent (EPA).
- Look in the attic in late winter for frost and stains.
What to do next
Describe where it is, how large and what water history the space has. Ask for references and a written scope. Massachusetts has no mold license, so check registration on Mass.gov. See the mold removal cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
Does tree cover make mold more likely?
It can contribute. Shade slows drying and leaves clog gutters. Clear gutters and keep soil sloping away.
Are older Groton houses more prone to mold?
Often, because of leakier foundations and attics. Newer houses can have problems too. The cause is usually a moisture source you can find.
What should I do first?
Do not disturb it. Find the moisture. Under about 10 sq ft on a hard surface you can usually clean it. Otherwise call a pro.
Do I need a mold test?
Usually not if you can see mold (EPA, CDC, DPH). See mold testing for the exceptions.
